Orthotics Splints

Proper orthotics, splints, harnesses, and other pieces of equipment can be a valuable part of your pet’s rehabilitation program. We like to think of them as “wearable therapy.”

When properly selected and fitted the right piece of therapy equipment may help your pet to stand to eat, go outside for a potty break, or go for a walk with you while maintaining good form – a must for any home exercise program.

But which one to use? And what size? Where do I order? How do I put it on? How often do I use it? These ae just a few questions that might be running through your head when you do a quick online search trying to find the perfect product to help your pet.

I remember going to Sox dog day at Comiskey Park and seeing a dog dragging his back foot wearing a plastic off the shelf orthotic. I knew his family probably saw him dragging his leg and went online and ordered what they’d hope would help. What they needed was a different piece of equipment that would allow him to lift his paw, not a brace that would support his ankle joint. I knew the right assist would allow this pup to walk all around Comiskey, taking in all the sights and smells, being much more comfortable not dragging his leg.

Scenarios like the one I described above are why we are so enthusiastic about helping you select, size, and fit the appropriate piece of equipment. It can be a great addition to helping your pet enjoy more days doing their favorite activities!

Prosthetics

A prosthesis is an artificial replacement for a body part. Dogs may obtain a prosthesis after an amputation or due to a congenital anomaly. We are so lucky to have our physical therapist, Lisa, who draws from her years of leading the pediatric prosthetic clinic at the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab. Our physical therapists can assist with initial fitting for the prosthesis, monitoring the fit, and instructing you and your pet in how to use the prosthesis so that you get the most out of your device!

Splints and Wraps

Splints are custom braces that are made of a lighter weight material than an orthotic. Wraps are fabric supports. Often our therapists fabricate splints after they determine a need for more structural support during therapeutic exercises. These can then be used when performing your pet’s home exercise program.

At Hope Chicagoland Pet Rehab, our therapists draw from their years of pediatric physical therapy experience to custom make splints for your pet. Splints can be fabricated during therapy sessions in your home or on location. We bring our supplies to you!

Standers

Standing provides an array of benefits for your pet including assisting with respiration, digestion, pressure relief, circulation, and strengthening. When a pet is unable to stand on their own, our therapists can fashion a “stander” that can allow the benefits of standing hands free. This can have an enormous emotional benefit for you and your pet!

Harnesses and Slings

Harnesses and slings can be beneficial when helping your dog with a mobility impairment to walk short distances or perform other activities like negotiating stairs or car transfers. But which one? Our therapists can help you select and fit the correct assist that can help you and your pet in your daily routines.

Carts

Carts are often referred to as dog wheelchairs. They can offer enormous physical and emotional benefits. We can’t say enough good things about how carts can be the link to independent mobility which can greatly enhance your pet’s life, (link to gift of mobility blog), At Hope Chicagoland Pet Rehab we can help you select, measure, and fit your pet for the perfect cart for your pet. What happy pet parents had to say:

Our pawtients love us!

As a dog mom to a newly paralyzed Dachshund, I'm so glad I found Jeanine! She taught us so much in our initial evaluation on how to care for our newly disabled pet and what we can be doing for him while he is healing. She is great resource, very knowledgeable, and a doxie lover herself. Definitely recommend for special needs pets.

-Kristy

Jeanine is a wonderful resource - incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and creative. She was integral in making sure my foster (correction, failed foster!) dog, Ben, had a terrific care plan ranging from working with the canine orthopedist to make sure his leg brace fit just right to creating a customized PT plan (and teaching me how to do the same on my own). Jeanine also helped me understand Ben's condition and, therefore, what to watch out for and how to help rehabilitate him. Thanks to Jeanine, this little guy is zipping all around the neighborhood (really, he doesn't slow down... ever!). Highly recommended!
